Selection Process:

The winner will be selected through the following three-part selection process.

1. Online voting
The first round of judging was carried out on the Threadless website where the designs went up for scoring by the online community for one week. The Threadless community voted for their favorite designs and the top 14 submissions were selected to go through to the next round of judging.

2. Selection by Art Director Rikako Nagashima
Special judge Rikako Nagashima selected the most unique “East Meets West” design for the Grand Prize from the 14 finalists. She also went through all of the submissions, and chose one outstanding design for the Judge’s Special Award.

Here’s Rikako Nagashima going through all the entries.

3. Selection by Threadless / Loftwork.com
From the remaining 13 finalists, Threadless and Loftwork.com staff picked 4 winning t-shirt designs.

Grand Prize

Creator name:drabjohn

Comment from Rikako Nagashima:

“This kitsch design brilliantly depicts the competition theme ‘East Meets West’ and cleverly captures images of Japanese manga and Western superheroes. I thought it was really cute as a t-shirt and the word ‘Super’ on the shirt is so silly, it made me laugh!”

Winner’s comment

I approached the East meets West challenge by first making a list of things representative of each culture. I then looked for connections between the two. The connection most interesting to me was found in comic books. I chose the classic Superman character as a generic representation for America and rendered him in a stereotypical Japanese Manga style. I found the combination to result in an absurd and funny depiction of the idealized characteristics from both cultures.

Judge’s Special Prize

Creator name:gnob

Comment from Rikako Nagashima:

“More so than the actual design, I picked this one because of the story being told in the design and how perfectly it fits with the theme of the competition. It cleverly depicts what can happen when East Meets West!”
